Running a moving sale without losing your weekend
Sort, price and sell what you won't pack, and put the money toward the move.
A moving sale is a yard sale with a deadline. Everything you don't sell either gets packed, hauled or donated, so the goal is to clear space, not to get top dollar for every item.
Start two weeks out
- Measure the new place. Furniture that won't fit is the first thing to sell.
- Sort each room into keep, sell, donate and trash. Be honest about things you've moved before and never unpacked.
- Pick a sale date at least a few days before moving day, so leftovers have time to go.
Price to move it
- Price big pieces fairly and say "must go by [date]." Buyers know that means you'll deal.
- Sell large items early through local listings, then use the sale day for everything else.
- Keep a short list of what you won't sell and cover or tape it off. Movers' boxes and the coffee maker go in a closed room.
Signs and timing
Put "MOVING SALE" in big letters on every sign. If your town has a town-wide tag sale weekend that lines up with your timeline, joining it can bring more shoppers past your door. Check the town's official page for how to register.
Track the cash
Write a cash goal tied to a real moving cost, like the truck or the first grocery run. Count once at noon and once at close. Keep it with you.
The last hour
Go to bag pricing or "make an offer." Anything left goes straight into the car for donation, not back into the house. Book a donation drop-off or pickup ahead of time so you aren't scrambling.
Don't forget
- Utility start and stop dates.
- A first-night box: chargers, sheets, towels, medicine, snacks and a few tools.
- Forwarding your mail.
